r&r head labs - rewriting narratives
It’s always good to work with a client that stands for something real.
R&R Head Labs is more than a barbershop. Their model is built around second chances. Creating opportunity, employment, and a path toward barber licensing for people rebuilding their lives. That kind of mission changes the energy on set before a camera ever comes out. There’s a different level of purpose in the room when the work itself is tied to something bigger than just aesthetics.
This shoot was also a reminder that production value is not purely a function of scale. With the right visual approach, a lean and efficient setup can still create imagery that feels cinematic, thoughtful, and true to the space it comes from. By staying nimble in the space, we were able to move quickly, respond to what was unfolding naturally, and create work that feels elevated without losing the honesty of the environment.
What mattered most was not overproducing the environment. The shop already had what it needed: texture, rhythm, personality, and real people with real presence. The goal became shaping the light just enough to elevate what was already there without stripping away the honesty of it.
“staying light on my feet, reading the energy, and letting the environment do part of the storytelling.”
That balance is where I feel most at home. Creating images that are visually intentional while still letting human presence come through untouched. The best frames from this shoot didn’t come from trying to over-control the room. They came from staying light on my feet, reading the energy, and letting the environment do part of the storytelling.
“They’re not trying to manufacture authenticity. They’re grounded in it.”
There’s a rawness to these images that I like. They feel lived in. They feel human. They feel connected to the place they were made. And to me, that’s part of what makes them work. They’re not trying to manufacture authenticity. They’re grounded in it.
Shoots like this also reinforce something I believe more and more: production value doesn’t only come from scale. It comes from taste, light, timing, and knowing what to leave alone. A nimble production can still create work that feels cinematic and elevated when the vision is clear and the subject matter has something real to say.
“production value doesn’t only come from scale. It comes from taste, light, timing, and knowing what to leave alone.”
R&R Head Labs is doing meaningful work in their community. I’m grateful to have been invited in to help tell a small piece of that story.
